Depression can make reaching out feel unusually difficult. Low energy, reduced motivation, hopelessness, or difficulty concentrating may create barriers to taking the first step. You do not need to wait until symptoms become overwhelming before asking for support.
Helyx Health provides outpatient depression treatment for adults in Beverly Hills and surrounding Los Angeles communities.
How depression may appear
Depression is not limited to sadness. It may involve emotional numbness, irritability, loss of interest, social withdrawal, sleep or appetite changes, exhaustion, difficulty making decisions, slowed thinking, guilt, or a sense that ordinary tasks require far more effort.
Symptoms can overlap with grief, trauma, anxiety, burnout, bipolar disorder, sleep problems, substance use, medication effects, and medical conditions. A clinical assessment helps determine what type of care may be appropriate.
Therapy for depression
Psychotherapy can help patients understand patterns that contribute to depression, reconnect with meaningful activities, improve relationships, develop coping strategies, and respond differently to self-critical or hopeless thoughts.
Treatment may draw from CBT, behavioral activation, interpersonal therapy, ACT, psychodynamic or relational approaches, mindfulness, DBT-informed skills, or trauma-focused care. The method should fit the patient rather than requiring the patient to fit a generic program.
Psychiatric care and medication management
A psychiatric evaluation may be useful when symptoms are persistent, recurrent, significantly impairing, or not improving sufficiently through therapy alone. The clinician considers current symptoms, health and medication history, previous treatment, side effects, and patient preferences before making recommendations.
Medication is one possible treatment component and is not required for every patient.
Coordinated treatment
Some patients benefit from working with both a therapist and psychiatric clinician. With permission, clinicians can coordinate around symptoms, response to treatment, and shared goals. Other patients may need only one service.
