Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a structured form of psychotherapy that examines connections among thoughts, emotions, physical responses, and behavior. Treatment helps patients recognize patterns and practice new responses that support their goals.
Helyx Health clinicians may incorporate CBT when it fits their training, the patient’s concerns, and the treatment plan.
How CBT works
CBT does not require patients to replace every negative thought with a positive one. Instead, it may help them evaluate interpretations more flexibly, understand how behavior reinforces distress, test predictions, and develop responses based on evidence and goals.
Behavioral strategies are often as important as cognitive work. Treatment may involve gradually approaching avoided situations, increasing meaningful activity, developing problem-solving skills, or changing routines that maintain symptoms.
What happens during CBT?
The patient and therapist establish goals and identify a working formulation of the problem. Sessions may include reviewing recent situations, learning a skill, practicing it together, and planning how to apply it outside therapy.
CBT is collaborative, but it is not a standardized script. The clinician adapts treatment to the patient’s symptoms, health, culture, identity, preferences, and readiness.
Concerns CBT may address
CBT-based approaches may be used for anxiety, depression, panic, insomnia, stress, trauma-related symptoms, OCD, and other concerns. Specialized applications require relevant training. For example, CBT-I is designed for insomnia, while ERP is a specialized behavioral treatment commonly used for OCD.
The fact that a clinician uses general CBT does not mean they provide every specialized CBT protocol.
Practice between appointments
Patients may be invited to track patterns, practice a skill, test a prediction, schedule an activity, or approach a feared situation gradually. These activities should connect clearly to treatment goals and be reviewed collaboratively.
Treatment length and progress
Treatment duration varies according to the concern, goals, severity, complexity, appointment frequency, and response. Helyx Health should not promise improvement within a fixed number of sessions.
Progress may include symptom change, reduced avoidance, better functioning, greater flexibility, or increased ability to handle future challenges.
